RECRUITING ANNOUNCEMENT – AUGUST 2026
The City of Woonsocket announces an open competitive examination for the position of police officer.
APPLICATION PROCESS- Step 1 - Applications must be submitted online by September 25th, 2026, to be considered for the January 2027 Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy. However, the Woonsocket Police Department will accept applications and will actively recruit candidates year-round for future Academy classes.
- Fit2Hire (www.F2Hire.com/Woonsocket-police-department). There is a $50 administrative fee to apply on Fit2Hire.
- PoliceApp (www.PoliceApp.com). There is a $35 administrative fee to apply on PoliceApp.
- Step 2 - Applicants must register for the written and fitness tests at https://www.fit2serveri.com/
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must be a US citizen
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent
- Have no felony convictions
- Probationary salary rate: $1,032.20 weekly
- Salary rate after probation: $1,411.69 weekly / Step 2 - $1,439.93 weekly (with an additional raise coming on 6/30/2027)
- Starting with 11 paid Vacatation Days, maxing out at 30 Paid Vacation days per year.
- 15 paid holidays; 10hrs of sick time per month; comprehensive medical, dental and vision insurance.
- 10% Longevity pay after 5 years of service
- Unlimited detail and patrol overtime along with Grant-funded traffic/DUI enforcement opportunities.
- Field Training Officer (FTO) Opportunities after 3 years of service.
- Detective Promotional Opportunities after 3 years of service.
- Supervisor Promotional Opportunities after 5 years of service.
- BCI-Forensics School Opportunities after 1 year of probation.
- Bike Patrol
- Violent Crime Patrol (VCP)
- Work with and alongside detectives
- SWAT
- Honor Guard
- Paid college education and professional development such as:
- Drug Recognition Expert School
- Gang Violence & Intelligence
- Vehicle Interdiction
- Motor Unit School
- Crisis/Hostage Negotiation
PARTICIPATE IN NUMEROUS IN-HOUSE TRAINING COURSES, TO INCLUDE:
- Use-of-Force (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Lock-up)
- Firearms Training at our own outdoor shooting range
- Unlimited access to our comprehensive, multizone fitness center that offers a variety of heavy liting and cardio equipment.
The written test will be administered online by Fit2serve.com on the following dates (confirm through Fit2serve):

Candidates must provide a passing certified Written Exam certificate from one of the test dates listed above or from a written assessment from Fit2Serve within two years of the application. Failure to pass the Written Exam with a score of 70 or above shall prevent an applicant from advancing in the selection process.

PRE-ENTRANCE FITNESS ASSESSMENTThe Physical Fitness Test will be administered by Fit2Serve on the following dates:

Candidates must provide a passing certified physical assessment certificate from Fit2serve dated within one year of application.

Applicants who pass the written and fitness assessments will be scheduled for an Oral Board. The oral board will take place at the Woonsocket Police Department, 242 Clinton St., Woonsocket, RI 02895 at a time to be determined.
ELIGIBILITY LIST
Applicants who complete these stages will be placed on an eligibility list.
BACKGROUND CHECKApplicants on the eligibility list are subject to an extensive background check. The background check consists of an integrity interview and a thorough examination of the candidate’s personal history, including employment, education, family, character references, credit, military service, encounters with law enforcement, and any other areas as directed. Candidates may be removed from the eligibility list because of the background check.
PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING & MEDICAL SCREENING
Candidates must pass psychological and medical examinations.
ACADEMY ENTRANCE FITNESS ASSESSMENTCandidates must attend an Academy Orientation at the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy on November 9th, 2026, and pass a fitness assessment on November 16th, 2026.
